While I'd admit I've only had time to play through the first 3 levels of the game, here are some early thoughts. I can understand why its got a Metacritic score of 87. The concept of the game feels really. A mix mash of side scrolling, RTS and rhythm games rolled into one. It seems these days that games are all about finding the winning combos of 2 game types and meshing them together e.g. Puzzlequest = Bejeweled/Strategy RPG.
Patapon is a definite first for its style, think Lemmings, your units scroll from left to right listening to your commands. Commands are given by tapping in a 4 button combination to a beat, then you wait as your army carries out its duties within another 4 beat frame. You can mess this all up by inputting the wrong button combo or tapping off beat. When you do get it right though, the game plays out like a turn based game.
At the moment all I can really say is that I want to spend more time with this game, but having a job kinda gets in the way. I was expecting it to be a bit more pick up and play, but there is a bit of a learning curve and lots of pre game equipping and menu surfing. This game surprisingly failed the girlfriend test. "Play this you'll love it!" "Whats all this menu crap, I don't want to play, where's my Lumines?!"
