Well I've finally played Gears of War. Dan a friend of mine picked it up and man did he ever have the full set up! Big high def Samsung LCDTV, and 5.1 surround, definately the way Gears of War was meant to be played.
The first thing I can say was the game was jaw dropping, I've seen videos online but until you actually see this game runnig on high def and play it in surround sound, you can't full appreciate just how good looking this game is. This is the first time I've ever seen a game catch the attention of both guys and girls at a small dinner party. There was 'whoops' and cheers everytime someone pulled off the grusome chainsawing and constant amazement at just how beautiful everything looked. Now that I've seen just how good next gen is going to look. I'm worried that Wii will just end up being far to underpowered and game not having enugh development time and as polished as games like Gear of War.
POLISH!! On the taxi ride home from Dan's house even my girlfriend was telling how thats the first game she has ever seen that looked SO polished, had no clipping, no bugs and felt like watching a movie. I'm starting to appreciate and understand the need for those 2 years development cycles of all games. I'm worried that Wii with its underpowered graphics will result in game producers rushing out a lot of crappy games with gimmicky game controls, instead of taking there time to develop games properly.
Dual analogue control. Perhaps mouse and keyboard are just too hard wired into my brain. I was really struggling with the controls but my friend Dan was squeezing off headshots 2 minutes after he picked up the controller. Having watched so many reviews online i jumped straight into hardcore mode. I can tell anyone that is a 360 newbie to forget about it. Despite what all the reviews say this game is hard, UNLESS you've owned a Xbox and 360 and the control scheme is second nature to you. For everyone else you'd better start that hike up the steep learning curve.
So am I sold on 360? Will I be enjoying the Gear of War trilogy for years to come? Most of the great 360 games seem to be FPS/3rd person shooters which I would prefer to play on the PC, they got a ton of sports games, but those always make it to the PC as well. There there are a whole lot of exclusive games coming up, that will all make it to the PC. However at the moment I've got an intel iMac and my old notebook at home. Neither of these can handle graphics at the level of Gears of War. So I think my PC will soon only be used for RTS games. I'm sold on the 360, just a question of when I'll pick it up, but probably after I get a Wii.
